WW1 Tanks v Wind Turbines, a Major Battlefield in Danger

In our Cambrai area battered by the Great War, each year poppies flourish in the battlefields.

Whilst we are being dazzled by the lavish celebrations commemorating the centenary of the Great War, a drama is brewing over one of the most important battlefields.

Tomorrow, wind turbines will bloom around Ribecourt, Flesquières, Cantaing, Noyelles, Beaucamp, etc.

Can we sacrifice these treasured memorials in total indifference, on behalf of energy interests, to install machines that will forever disfigure the landscape that is so richly full of tragic, but unforgettable, memories.

How can we not be appalled by the lack of consideration by the promoters of wind farms?

The historical heritage of 1914-1918 was simply ignored by the financial excuses totally neglecting the human sacrifice of 40,000 British and Germans soldiers. This famous Field of Honour that saw the world's first major tank battle on 20 November 1917, will give way to fields of wind turbines.

Some of the finest panoramas in the south of Nord department will disappear.

After the A2 and A26 motorways, the future Seine-Nord Canal, the remains of the Great War will, once again, be disrupted, disfigured or even destroyed by the access roads, ditches, excavations and wiring infrastructure.

The thousands of visitors each year who come from all over the world to pay homage, will be appalled that there has been such a disregard for the memory of those who fought and died for our peace. How will we be able to welcome them and join in with them when they say 'We will remember them' with such emotion?

We are just miserable and helpless spectators...
